I am going to list a few popular discussion points and I want you to pay attention to your physical reaction.
This simple exercise will help ilustrate true engagement and help you to understand why motivation techniques and strategies that keep your employees happy are not enough to create true engagement.
Imagine if you will, that you are at a Dinner Party with friends and colleagues. After a few drinks the discussions seem to be getting a little more lively. Ask yourself how would you react if you heard the following satements:
1.) Unions have destroyed this country.
2.) President Obama is leading this country in the right direction.
3.)The New York Yankees are going to buy another Championship
4.) A woman should have the right to choose what she does with her body.
5.) Same Sex Marriage should be legalized nationally.
If you are like me, regardless of your position, you would have to physically TRY NOT TO react emotionally. You would have to exert some effort to either not get involved in the conversation, or to show some sort of reserve.
Your head may be ready to explode on the inside, but on the outside you really want to maintain some sense of control and sophistication. Or,
Do you immediately "Engage" into the conversation with uncontrolled body contortions, loud and boisterous reactions and arguments without caring who you offend?
Now go back and take a look at those questions and ask yourself what they have in common. What is missing from the employee engagenment discussion?
